A Journey from Haight Street to Jerusalem

Aryae, a 22-year old college student in 1960s San Francisco, meets a famous spiritual teacher, rents a house, moves in together with his best friends, and starts a spiritual community for him. To everyone's amazement a tide of thousands of young people from many faiths and backgrounds flows in through their doors, carrying their lives in wildly unanticipated directions.

The teacher, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, gets recognized as Judaism's leading spiritual musician, and one of its most influential spiritual leaders, of the 20th century. The community, the House of Love and Prayer, becomes part of the legend of 1960s San Francisco.

Aryae's best friends Elya and Miriam leave San Francisco and head for Jerusalem, where they wind up living as ultra-Orthodox Jewish mystics. Many others from the House join them. Aryae stays behind and winds up living a secular life as a Silicon Valley business owner. After Shlomo dies, Aryae feels compelled to tell the story. To try to understand the lives of his old friends from so many years ago and what Shlomo really meant to them all, and to try to pull together the scattered fragments of his own life, he travels to Jerusalem.

This story, of the spiritual quest which touches seekers across all faiths, invites us to reflect on the deep mysteries of our lives, our teachers, friendship, and the glory of the journey.
